Common Pergola Sizes

  • 10x10 ft: A cozy seating nook for two to four people
  • 12x14 ft: Fits a small dining table or lounge seating comfortably
  • 14x16 ft: Our most popular size — room for dining plus a separate lounge area
  • 16x20 ft or larger: Full outdoor living room with dining, lounge, and walking space

Size Around Your Furniture First

Rather than picking a size in the abstract, start with the furniture you want underneath it. A standard 6-person outdoor dining set needs roughly 10x12 feet of covered space with walking room around the edges. Add a lounge seating area and you're typically looking at 14x16 feet or more.

Shade Coverage for North Florida Sun

A traditional open-slat pergola provides dappled, partial shade — great for filtered light but not full midday sun protection. In Suwannee County's long, intense summer sun, many homeowners add a solid roof panel, louvered top, or shade cloth insert to get real relief during peak afternoon hours. We size the structure with your shade goals in mind from the start, not as an afterthought.

Freestanding vs. Attached

Attached pergolas connect to the home, which usually makes them more affordable to build and easier to wire for lighting or fans. Freestanding pergolas cost a bit more but offer complete placement flexibility — over a fire pit, near a garden, or anywhere else on a larger rural lot that doesn't require it to touch the house.

Don't Forget Clearance & Setbacks

Pergolas attached to the home or exceeding certain heights may fall under the same permit and setback rules as a covered deck in Suwannee County. We factor property line setbacks, roof overhang clearance, and any HOA or flood-zone requirements into the design before we finalize sizing.

Pairing a Pergola With Your Deck

A pergola works beautifully as a standalone patio cover or layered on top of a new or existing deck. If mosquitoes and no-see-ums are a concern — common near the river and wooded lots — consider pairing it with a screened enclosure for true year-round comfort.
